Choose a Location in Scotland

Choosing your location is a very important start to planning your destination wedding. Do you have a vision of what sort of look and feel you’d like for your wedding? Maybe it is with a view of the mountains or a Scotland beach wedding? Maybe you’d prefer a city vibe?

Whatever it is, you need to know in order to choose the right location for you.

Here are some Scotland location ideas for you:

Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a unique and romantic Scotland destination wedding location for couples choosing to plan a luxury wedding. With its historic sites, stunning nature and vibrant culture, there's something special in the air here.

From the iconic Edinburgh Castle to Calton Hill’s amazing views of the cityscape below, couples will find no shortage of gorgeous backdrops for their day.

There are many incredible venues here such as luxurious hotels. As well as local suppliers who specialise in creating personalised experiences for all types of weddings – like me a Scotland wedding planner and stylist

With its cobblestone streets and lush green space, Edinburgh offers an atmosphere that is truly unforgettable. And with so many cultural attractions like museums and galleries, you will have plenty to explore after you exchange vows!

Glasgow

Glasgow is ideal for couples looking for a Scotland destination wedding in a romantic and beautiful city – located on the River Clyde which offers couples a distinctly urban atmosphere rich in culture and charm.

Couples who choose this city as their wedding destination will be able to enjoy its vibrant nightlife, stunning architecture, great shopping areas, lively music scene, and a variety of activities that will make your special day even more memorable!

You could even finish the day with 5-star cuisine and drinks in the city with your family and friends – make sure you book a table or room well in advance.

The Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands is a beautiful location and is an awe-inspiring backdrop for your special day, with its majestic mountains, rolling hills, and powerful lochs.

You can choose from a variety of historical castles, including Edinburgh Castle in Scotland's capital city of Edinburgh and Eilean Donan Castle, which is located on an island surrounded by waterfalls and breathtaking views.

The area also has a number of picturesque locations ranging from remote beaches to flower-filled meadows that capture the best of the region's natural beauty.

Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond is an ideal location if you want something a bit more intimate. It is located in one of Scotland's most picturesque areas and provides a romantic and secluded setting.

With its crystal blue waters, rolling green hills, and majestic castles in the distance, it's a truly gorgeous location.

Loch Lomond has something for every couple looking to get married, from quaint hideaways tucked away in the woods to grand manors offering luxurious accommodations with breathtaking views.

There are so many other locations for your Scotland destination wedding such as St Andrews and the Isle of Sky.

Choose a Scotland wedding venue

Next up is choosing your ideal wedding venue – a space that allows you to create a luxury wedding. This is ideally a space that offers big windows to let in natural light, unique features and grand designs.

Also, choosing a dry hire space is a good idea too, so you are truly able to design your ideal wedding day.

As a luxury wedding planner and stylist, I have so many of Scotland's best wedding venues to suggest.

Legal Requirements

Certain legal requirements must be met in order to hold your Scotland destination wedding.

  • You must be at least 16 years old. If you are under the age of 18, you will need parental permission.

  • You must notify the registrar in the district where you intend to marry of your intention to marry. This notice must be given at least 29 days before the wedding and no more than three months before the wedding.

  • You must provide the registrar with certain documents, such as birth certificates, passports, or other forms of identification, and, if applicable, evidence of divorce or annulment.

  • At your wedding ceremony, you will need two witnesses.

  • At least 7 days before the wedding, you must obtain a marriage schedule from the registrar. Both partners, witnesses, and the celebrant must sign this document.

  • In Scotland, you can get married in either a religious or civil ceremony. An authorised celebrant must lead the ceremony.

It is important to note that additional requirements may apply depending on your specific circumstances, such as whether you are a foreign national or have previously been married.

It's always a good idea to check with the registrar in the district where you intend to marry for more information on the legal requirements.

Scotland Weather

Scotland's weather is pretty crazy and unpredictable, but that is part of the fun, right?!

Spring

During the months of March, April, and May, average maximum temperatures will range from 7°C (45°F) to 13°C (55°F).

You have the daffodils, bluebells, cherry blossoms, and rhododendrons which are in bloom. There are plenty of activities to enjoy with lively wildlife and a gentle breeze in the air.

Summer

The warmest months in Scotland are typically June, July, and August, with average maximum temperatures ranging from 15°C (59°F) to 17°C (63 °F).

Because of Scotland's latitude, we have lovely long summer days and often an extended twilight!

Autumn

Temperatures in Scotland in the Autumn are likely to range from around 8°C (46°F) to 14°C (57°F) from September to November.

Autumn colours are vibrant, as the trees change from green to fiery reds, oranges, and yellows – perfect for those wedding photos.

Winter

The coldest months in Scotland are typically December, January, and February, with average maximum temperatures hovering around 5°C (41°F).

In Scotland, the average number of snow days ranges between 15 and 20. However, the Highlands' peaks and mountains receive around 100 days of falling snow!

A Scotland wedding photographer is essential if you want to ensure every moment, emotion and detail is captured. You’ve spent so much time and money planning the day of your dreams, so why not invest in the memories you can look back on and live over again?
